Thanks to B from Maryland.

Joppa - Jericho Covered Bridge - This bridge is the last covered bridge standing in Harford County, built in the early 1800’s. Legend has it that several lynching occurred at this bridge during and after the Civil War, in which the captured people were hung from the upper rafters, sometimes many at a time. If you stop your car on the narrow bridge late at night, and look in your rear view mirrors, the image of a swinging body can be seen.

This is the story my friends and I checked out. We went late at night during winter, it was November/ December if I remember right of 03, this past year. 1st my friend went without me and told me how there jeep wouldn’t move off a 2nd bridge. They found this bridge while looking for the one above, this was an old iron bridge big enough for one car. I’m not sure of the name of it, but it was over the falls and was fairly old. They stopped on the bridge and when my friend tried to drive again his jeep wouldn’t start! Then if you look down to your right to the river you can see what appears to be a soldier hunched over on a horse, the horse looks back at you and you can see his eyes and he contiues to walk. If you keep driving and look to the left into the fields you will notice someone walking along. They are dressed in what I guess could be civil war era clothing. The whole time you see numerous orbs and what not. Then we contiued to look for the Covered Bridge and found it. On the way to the bridge you could hear whispers in the woods and see what looked like cigarettes being light. Once again you saw plenty of orbs. Remember this is late at night in a very off the road area without street lights and lamps. During one point I glanced out my window and saw a face right next to my car window! Needless to say it scared the crap out of me. Then we reached the bridge and drove through, turned off the lights and checked to see if we could see anything and we could! We actually saw 2 bodies, perhaps 3 hanging. From under the bridge we could see a light that appeared out of nowhere. Each time we went through we saw the bodies and all you see really are the legs, the lower half. If you try to look for more you simply won’t see anything. My friends have gone back numerous times and on the last trip after they did the bridge, someone appeared behind the car and was chasing them. It just seemed to be a faceless being. I don’t know what else you would call it. I hope you find this story interesting. Everything seems to be more “awake” during a cold night.

The following are even more Scarier :

  1. i have been to the covered bridge several times and have expierenced things I know were real. The strangest thing I have seen there was probably when I was about 17(I am 22 now) My friends and I would go and play Ouijji there(being silly) We have always seemed to have gotten a boy named Will. He told us that his father was a slave owner and that he had fallen in love with a young slave that eventually bore his child. He said his father was so furious that he had shot him and hung the girl and burned her, and then threw the baby off the bridge. We did not know the area well, but our “ghost” had repeated a number over and over on the board….we asked if it was a date, or year…all was no. He spelled out Black gate….and dig. So I thought this is stupid….lets just drive around and look for a black gate. So we did and oddly enough we turned into Vanderbilt ct. to turn around. In that court is a house with a black iron gate that surrounds it. The address on the mailbox was the number displayed on the Ouiiji. I get tears in my eyes just re-living that night because it was the scariest thing that has ever happpened to me. We have also heard drums, people singing, seen what looks like cigarettes being lit. And my friend at I saw a woman standing right next to the car. The Ouijji was so cold that you could actually see the cold coming off of it. I have never seen anyone hanging, but after all of this I don’t really think I want to. I know that place is haunted….but if you ever come in contact with Will, he is very nice.

  5. I was at the bridge last night at 1:00am with two friends. I was dropped off on one side while they drove through. On their way through the bridge I took pictures then walked through the bridge myself. I felt at ease, no cold spots or any other indication anything was wrong. After I met up with my friends on the other side we started taking pictures of the bridge. We got the rafters, took pictures inside and out, and we had a video camera. After about 30 minutes of going in, under, and around the bridge, nothing happened. Two of the pictures did show something though. One showed a white orb in the bridge, and the other showed a kind of mist and what looked like white traces zig zagging in the lower left corner. I work second shift and often drive through the tunnel on my way home form work and I have NEVER seen anything or felt any kind of presence, and I’ve been looking. While we definitely got evidence of something, I think this story has been blown out of proportion over the years. I also have a friend who told me that when he was in high school for a laugh he and his buddies would “hang” themselves from the rafters to scare people driving through the bridge. This probably added to the popularity of the story. Sorry, but I think the stories are bull shit, people were probably stoned or tripping and think they saw things.

I was up there last night and we drove around for awhile through the bridge and out and nothing happened and we didnt see nothing. The last time we went through we stoped and shut out our lights int he bridge honked are horn three times and looked back and didnt see anything,After we turned our lights on we looked up and in front of us on the side of the road was a man with long black hair staggering like he was drunk or sumthin. His clothes were all raggedy and torn and he didnt look up at us once witch was weird cause my boyfriend fliped out and slammed on the gas acting like he was goin to hit him to scare him and not once did he look up or run.If that was me I would have then when I looked back right after we passed him he was gone.I dont know what to call it or even if it was real but it freaked me and my boyfriend out lol.We also got alot of big orbs on video and voices that sound like wispers.I dont know what it was but it was freaky.

  7. People will only believe in ghost or supernatural when they personally meet up with them. I started to believe since I encountered ghost 15 years ago in Japan. In this 15 years, I have seen ghost twice, one in my client’s dorm & another in hotel.

  8. I went to the covered bridge with my 3 friends one night because we had been there before and woundered what would happen if it was later at night..We sat in the car with the engine turned off but the keys still in the ignition, we were all dead silent when I notice a shadowy figure and saw something dripping..My friends all saw the exact same thing..It wasn’t raining but the front of the car was hit by drops of water..In a panic I insisted him to turn the car on and drive…when he attempted to the car wouldn’t start.so he tried again and it still wouldn’t start..finally it did and we drove off..As days went on thing were happening..We saw figures of Slaves standing on the side of the road staring that disapeared. One morning 2 days later my sister was freaking out swearing she was seeing ghost that wanted to harm her..and one day i looked at my arm there was a burn that spelled out a “safe” and after that nothing weird happened..untill we decided to return to the bridge..as we drove closer my friends suddenly got sick and threw up everywhere..she was throwing up blood..shes fine now..but the oods of her throwing up blood randomly and being fine the next day scared us…soo we didn’t go to the bridge that night..

  9. I can assure you that not a single person in our group was stoned or tripping when we saw what we did. I believe that not everyone is open to seeing Ghosts and Spirits, that only certain people are “allowed.”

  10. It’s bullshit. The bridge isn’t haunted. The only thing that happens there is the imaginations of a bunch of kids and twenty somethings getting the better of them. It’s not Scooby Doo people. Where did everyone hear of these “legends” of people being lynched and slaves/ ex-slaves being hung from the rafters? The story of the bridge burning down and a little girl’s image being “etched” into the bridge structure, by the heat of the fire, is bullshit too.

What evidence does every one have that the bridge is haunted? Every picture I see is of an orb. Orbs do not indicate paranormal activity.

  12. OK, I live in a very close proximity to the covered bridge and have lived there all my life (22 years). I just want to put to rest this silly rumor about the bridge being haunted. Since I\’ve been young my friends and I, several who also live very close, would have bonfires in the woods next to the bridge and have been in and around the bridge at all times of night. I have never once seen any strange things happen in the covered bridge, except for a lot of dumbass kids trying stupid tricks, like the turn your lights off and honk one, in the bridge and we always just think its funny. I think that this site is even more hilarious because so many guible people really do try these things and believe the liars telling these stupid rumors. So, furthermore everyone can stop claiming to see orbs and figures or anything else unusual.

  13. HOLY SHIT! Me n my guys went to the bridge on friday the thirteenth to hang fake bodies from the rafters and to jump out at passing cars. We parked our cars down the street and started to walk back when we started to hear whispers and voices that sounded kinda like a little girl.None of us really acknowledged it at first cause we didn\’t want to seem like pussies but then we started to smell burning and started to get really freaked out when we couldnt see any fires or any smoke anywhere. when we were hanging the ropes from the rafters to try to scare people, we shined our flashlights to the rafters and briefly saw a dark figure crouching on the beam and holding onto a rafter. we freaked out and almost chickened out but since we only saw it for a second, we decided to keep going with our plan. we heard a car coming and saw headlights so we went to the side so we could jump out and scare people. The car drove away too fast so we couldnt prank them, but it was getting late so we decided to head home. when we were getting the rope down from the rafters it seemed to be caught so my friend pulled the rope as hard as he could and ended up falling on his ass! the scary part was when he got to his feet and had a couple of drops of blood or something on his shirt . we were all like dude, did you get a bloody nose? and he was like, yeah, i guess so. when we got back to the car, he went to wipe his nose, only to discover that he wasnt the one that was bleeding. to this day we wont go back because of the things we saw. everytime we get together we find more in common with the things we saw and heard there that night.

  14. Last night we returned to Jericho Bridge at 11 pm in the rain. We turned onto the road, and passed the bridge. Since there were too many cars to stop then, we turned around and went back. On the middle of the bridge, we stopped the car, rolled down the windows, flashed the headlights and tapped the breaks. Assuming that the bridge again had failed to produce any sign of a haunting, we began to laugh and turned the car back on. As soon as we did so, we both heard a blood-curdling scream of a teenage girl. All other noise ceased at that very moment. Naturally, we sped away. After relaxing for ten minutes and trying to understand what had just happened, we returned to the bridge and did the same thing. No scream. I believe that if it was anyone trying to scare us, they would have screamed both times. It took multiple visits to the bridge to produce any signs of a haunting.

  16. Memorial Day Weekend me and some family members decided to take a little trip to the Jericho Bridge the night before me and my sister-in-law decided to do some research about the bridge. The next night we decided to go to the bridge once again. With our flash lights in hand we walked up towards the bridge while the “men” went to turn the vehicle around! Once we got up there we started recording… you know asking the normal questions “Is anyone here would you like to speak to us Blah Blah Blah.” After we recorded for a while we asked the “men” to come back they picked us up and we went to review the tapes. On the first recorder we heard “you again” then it sounded like something growled in the recorder. We turned the vehicle around and went back to the bridge this time with almost everyone. My brother-in-law Bob decided to come with us this time and walk up to the bridge. Once again we started recording. We got back into the vehicle and Bob seen a black figure walk into the woods near a road sign. Needless to say me and my sister in law just looked at each other because the night before when we were researching the bridge we found that some people have seen a Black figure walk across the road into the woods and we were the only ones up that night when we did some research!!!

I turned off the car, not expecting anything. We talked for a minute about stories we had heard, and then decided to leave. When i tried to start the car, it would not start. This continued for a couple minutes and it finally started. I believe in that 100%

  20. Being from Bel Air, when I was 16-18 (I’m now 27), my friends and I made trips to the bridge somewhat regularly. Hell, if I had a date, I’d take her there to freak her out, only so she’d want me to hold her.

I believe in ghosts and spirits, but I don’t believe that this bridge is haunted. I have been to this bridge 100s of times with different people, and never once has anyone seen anything. Sure, you get a little bit of a creepy feeling, but it passes (kind of like when you’re home alone and the phone rings suddenly).

We have proof of it in recordings as well as in photographs. I myself have captured a picture of a ghost on the bridge its just I dont know how to post it up on here!!!

This comment is for everyone who believes that this bridge is not haunted because it is i have solid proof if u want to hear it e-mail me pinksista623@yahoo.com we started going there on thanksgiving night . always after 12 , at first there wasn’t much going on but we have been there everynight since and each night more things happen i agree that there is a little girl there because she has spoke back to me on my recorder she has even said my name a couple of times . there are many spirits there . i’ve also heard her singing . we’ve heard screaming too . my husband , my brother and my cousin were all on the bridge(i was in the car ) my brother sat down and they were asking questions a few minutes go by and they bolted for the car . they would not explain it to me until we got home and reviewed our video and voice recorder. on the video there wasn’t much but the recording was absolutly horrifying . the recording also matched up with my video . first you here a scream which is what they heard while they were there , and u hear them say f**k this and all u hear after is moaning and screming and the ghost are repeating what they say it sounds like they say i want you over and over . just e-mail me with jericho bridge i will send everything i have . we are going to continue going to the bridge for more proof . so for everyone who says that the bridge isnt haunted , well thats bullshit .

  29. I have not been to the bridge in a very long time due to the fact that I can not get anybody to go with me. Probably about 3 or 4 years ago, there was a Summer where a group of friends and myself would go to the bridge late at night, it was a habbit. I was there in the evening when it was still light out my very first time going. We parked along the right hand side of the exit of the bridge (the section of road that gets windy and narrow towards the homes that are back there) and walked through. Nothing happened, but when I got to the other side of the bridge there was a skeleton key laying on the little concrete wall area before the wood of the bridge actually begins. I wanted to take the key and maybe figure out what it belonged to but the person I was with suggested that could only stir up trouble. I left the key alone and we walked the path at the beginning of the bridge set off to the left. Apparently there is a story about a hermit who used to live back in those woods and would eat hikers, and now his ghost remains and would chase people away. Curiousity and all…so we went investigating. There is a part of the trail that curves down towards the water. At this part I felt completely at ease, the air was neutrial in temperature, there were not noises, no wind, the sun was shining straight down through the trees, it was total peace. I have debated the possiblity of this being a faery circle. Further back on the trail we came across a section of overgrown weeds that seemed to be covered a cubby of sorts in the bushes, once we got close to this section we began hearing noises like footsteps in the woods and they were getting louder and closer the longer we stayed, so…we quickly left and headed home. Some friends of mine have done automatic writings at the bridge, we have placed flowers at the edge only to have them hangging upside down and dried within the hour, heard screams, had hand prints display on our vehicles, seen shadow figures, and things of that nature. The bridge has quite a tragic history which I imagine is what has caused it to be such a strange place to visit. I am an amateur paranormal investigator and have investigated a lot of the bed and breakfasts in Havre de Grace along with some places out of state, e-mail me if you have any questions.

  30. Alright, i have never seen any ghosts or spirits on the bridge, but i did see something very weird. I was with my GF at the time and it was a Thursday night and we were bored and just felt like driving around. We decided to drive through the covered bridge, we had done so many times in the past without seeing anything. It was about 11:30 i would say and when we got to the bridge there was people all over it. They were like older guys, i dont remb seeing any girls or anything. They were all wearing white and were just sitting on the railings on the side with books in their hands/laps. I drove through real slow and a couple of them just ooked up at us and waved slowly. I drove away kind of freaked out a bit but had never seen anything spirit-wise.

Ok, me and my friends went down to the bridge. this one bitch was so scared she wouldn’t be left alone in the car. so my friend stayed with this black kid in the car, hopeing to get some. so it was just me and this and and this girl, we walked the trail, i got bored, didn’t see anything or hear anything, they started smoking and i got bored and went to investigate the bridge. i walked through the bridge a couple of times didn’t see or hear anything, only got a creepy sort of feeling. so i went and looked under the bridge, didn’t see or hear anything down there. so i went back up to the bridge, took some pics on my cell, nothing interesting in the pix. we drove off back home disappointed we didn’t see anything. maybe it was just a bad night? you cant always force a ghost to appear.

  33. My best friend and I just went to the bridge tonight. It was an incredibly creepy night because there was SO much fog and the moon was an eerie orange-tinted crescent moon. We arrived at the bridge and stopped the car in the dark of the bridge for a moment. It was unsettling just because the environment was so eerie. I was not liking it very much to be in the dark stalled in the bridge because it was very confining. I convinced my friend to pull the car so that the back half was in the bridge and the front end where we were sitting was out. We waited a bit, looking back every so often, but saw nothing. We also tuned our car radio to a static-filled AM station to see if we could catch any odd noises or perhaps even an EVP, but nothing happened. The whole time I was on the phone describing the events to a friend in NY and he said that it sounded as if someone kept walking by and breathing or even cars that kept driving by…. but I heard nothing on my end. After we drove away he said the noises stopped. Overall, there was nothing there to convince me of any paranormal activity, although the environment itself was indeed unsettling.

My friend who accompanied me this evening to the bridge has visited a few times before. She never saw anything on any of her visits except for one, in which she was accompanied by a friend whom she claims “attracts paranormal things.” On that trip, she claims that while she and this friend were on one side of the bridge, another friend was on the other…. and above that girl they saw a large black body-shaped object swaying. The girl near the shape soon saw the object and the three sped off in fright. I hope the next time I visit will be more eventful, but nothing to permanently scar me for life!

I have seen a shadow figure at the bridge also. It was standing though, inside the bridge with one leg up against the railing that’s there on the side. I was actually going to try to contact the owners of that bridge to see if I couldn’t get in for an official investigation…would be very interesting!

  36. I’d be careful about calling out to spirits on the bridge. Unless you have done it before in other locations and know what you are doing I think it’s sort of risky. Then again, it doesn’t seem like anything has been happening at the bridge in a while so you might be okay. Just make sure you are well protected.

  42. I’ve been going there since I was 5, never saw anything. the only creepy thing was when we were walking to the plantation rain came down harder and harder. &then when we took pictures at the bridge there was all this colorful stuff in the back. But other than that, NOTHING@
